Symptoms

When scanning Windows computers using an Active Directory Domain scanning target, assets may display the following error message:

Cannot resolve IP address

Cause

When using an Active Directory Domain scanning target, Lansweeper attempts to connect to Windows computers using their NetBIOS name or Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN). If these names cannot be resolved to an IP address from the Lansweeper scanning server, the error is shown.

The most common cause is a DNS resolution issue between the scanning server and the target Windows computers.

Resolution

Option 1: Verify DNS resolution

Ensure that DNS resolution is functioning correctly for all Windows computers in your environment, specifically from the Lansweeper scanning server.

Recommended checks:
  • Confirm that all Windows computers have valid DNS records.
  • Verify that the scanning server uses the correct DNS servers.
  • Test name resolution from the scanning server using tools such as:
    • nslookup
    • ping <hostname>
  • Resolve any DNS configuration or replication issues in your Active Directory environment.

For detailed guidance, see Microsoft’s documentation:

Option 2: Use an IP Range scanning target

If DNS resolution cannot be guaranteed or is not required for your setup, you can scan Windows computers using an IP Range scanning target instead. This method scans devices directly by IP address and does not rely on DNS name resolution.
