Lansweeper identifies network assets by comparing specific data from the scanned asset with data in its database, using a “unique key” or “internal ID.” If the unique key matches an existing asset, the asset’s information is updated; otherwise, a new asset page is created.
Windows assets: Unique key is <NetBIOS domain or workgroup name>\<NetBIOS computer name>\1. Changes in name or domain can generate new assets unless Windows rename detection is enabled.
Monitor assets: Unique key is Mon:<3-letter monitor manufacturer code>:<monitor serial>.
Other assets: Unique key can be a MAC address, IP address, device ID, UUID, or a randomly generated string if manually created.
