Symptoms
Last year, Microsoft implemented hardening changes in DCOM required for CVE-2021-26414.
June 14, 2022, these hardening changes are enabled by default but with the ability to disable them using a registry key.
Microsoft Source

We have received several reports of Access Denied scanning issues since the June 2022 updates released on June 14th.

Patches involved:
  • KB5014697 for Windows 11
  • KB5014699 for Windows 10
Solution
If all communicating systems, being the Lansweeper scanning server and targeted devices have received the latest updates, remote scanning should continue to work.

Customer feedback
Our Lansweeper is installed on Server 2012 R2. Once we applied the below Windows updates on this server, Lansweeper functioned correctly again.

  • KB5014738
  • KB5014808

I have a question regarding the solution. Does that mean if we update our Lansweeper Scanning Server that remote scanning will only work for the devices with the latest updates and stop working for the devices that are not updated? Or will it work for both the updated devices and devices that are not updated?

Kind regards,
Tim

Hi Tim,

Thank you for your question. The most-reported scenario is that the access denied scanning error suddenly occurs when the clients are updated, but the scanning server was not. But in any case, both the client and the server should receive the latest updates to ensure they are speaking the same language and can continue to connect.

In your case, when you update the Lansweeper scanning server, you will likely see the access denied scanning errors popping up on clients that have not received the latest update. Updating these clients should fix that issue.
