Software Normalization with Lansweeper Sites

One of the benefits of Lansweeper Sites is Software Normalization. The normalization feature is not available in Lansweeper Classic.

Lansweeper not only showcases the software inventory as it was scanned, but it can also "normalize" it by transforming it into a standardized format. Using machine learning, Lansweeper Sites standardizes software names, publishers and version numbers.

Normalization advantages

Normalizing software has many advantages:

  • Eliminate discrepancies - publishers may release different names for a publisher name. Normalizing will reduce the number of vendor names and provide a “simplified” name.
  • Easily match installed titles - quickly finding the name of a software means you can focus on the version numbers to ensure you are patched and up to date.
  • Accurate Counts - with normalized names, you won’t miss-count software titles or miss the one oddly-named software package.
  • Quick finds - you will be able to quickly and reliably find named software in your environment.

For instance, a Google software product may have its publisher listed as "Google LLC" or the older "Google Inc." in Add/Remove Programs. Lansweeper Sites recognizes these variations and normalizes both of those names to "Google."

Normalization of software should be enabled by default. The setting can be found at the top of the software list in the software module. The normalization process will combine all versions of the software, all the unique naming provided by the vendor, and create a single software item name.
