Ok I *hope* I have resolved this so poting what was done so others can benefit. The SQL DB is MSSQL2008R2, after Windows 2008R" SP1 was applied to the OS the problem above appeared. To resolve it MSSQL 2008R2 SP1 was installed. This seems to have resolved the issue.
