I'm having trouble adding a custom field... more of a "I don't know how to add one". We are about to purchase a premium version and I have to figure out how to add a field to enter ASSET TAGS. I can't find the "add tab" on the Configuration > Computers page. I have the it-extrainfo.aspx open and can see the "custom1" section; i just can't figure out how to get it to show.
Could someone please provide a step-by-step guide?

You can create a new custom report and then use the substring sql function to create the needed field : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms187748.aspx

Right, some of the systems aren't named with this convention though. For those, I'd like to be able to enter in the Asset Tag manually since I intend to use lansweeper as my only inventory system and require that I am able to identify a certain box by physically looking at the Asset Tag on it.
I hope I didn't mess up the explanation.

I want to be able to see display the asset tag of the computer in one of the columns. In the attached picture, the first 2 computers are named with the asset tag as the last 4 digits (4195 , 4191)
Will I be able to get the lansweeper to pick up that into a table? If not, how do I create a table and display that column, next to description for example.

Please take a look at the following topic, it renames a custom field but does not add one : http://www.lansweeper.com/forum/yaf_postst2697_Lansweeper-Custom-Fields-question.aspx
