Interesting on 3.1

Please bear with me, this is a long post. I'm providing some information to help others with troubleshooting.

I installed a new instance of Lansweeper on a new server.

Installed on Windows 2003 server, R2 SP2. Fully patched. .Net 2.0, fully patched as well. No firewall, no port blocking at all.

SQL 2005 Express installed locally.

Here are the errors I was getting.

In the Lansweeper service error log: (this one repeats about every 2 minutes)

Interestingly enough, if I open IE to the port number on that PC, I get the error that the page cannot be displayed.


So, a bit of deduction....

I set up the service to use a domain user. I always use service users locally with limited access rights to the system. The user had rights to the database and had rights to the service directory so it could write the error log. I found this out rather quickly...if you use a user who is NOT a local admin, have to grant rights to that service directory.

The service was starting, but then failing. When I added the user to the local admin group, all worked well. When I take it out, doesn't work at all.

Ok, so I think about this a bit. In the previous version, the instructions were to go back to the service properties and re-type the password. What this does is change the local security policy by granting "Log on as service" permissions.

What security rights does that service user need on the local system? I've tried adding a few other security settings, but it appears that (at this point) that service user needs to be a local admin. I don't want to grant that user full rights to the server by adding it to the local admin group. I'd prefer just to grant it rights to only what functions it absolutely has to perform.
