I did some searching but couldn't find a definitive answer to this. I would like the ability to manually add Dell computers into Lansweeper with just the Service Tag/Serial Number so we can keep track of new computers that we've purchased. Once the computer is imaged and put on our network I would like Lansweeper to simply take over that asset record of the manually created asset but it doesn't seem to be the case. I only tested it on one machine but I ended up with the manually created asset which just included the Dell service tag, domain and the service tag as the unique asset name AND then a new asset ID for the machine once it was on the network and I did a lspush from the client after it was done imaging.

Is this expected behavior? Is there a way to manually add assets and then have Lansweeper detect the existing serial/service tag and update that asset?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Lansweeper identifies a Windows computer based on the machine’s:
• Computer name/domain name combination, if rename detection is not enabled under Configuration/Scanning Setup/Server Options.
• MAC address/model/serial combination, if rename detection is enabled under Configuration/Scanning Setup/Server Options.

In other words, Lansweeper won’t know the computer being scanned is a computer already in the database (and will create a new asset page instead) unless you:
• Submit the computer name and domain name the computer will have when deployed in the network.
• Enable rename detection under Configuration/Scanning Setup/Server Options and submit the computer’s MAC address, model and serial number.

I had same experience with that issue.
Lansweeper use serial number, Assetname and Mac adress (please correct me if I am wrong)
When you create a new asset, be sure that 'Assetname' is not locked, just only serial number.
That have solved my problem but you can also do that way: use 'detect when a computer has been renamed' in server options from lansweeper
