Having a device's unique identifier as its IP address causes all kinds of issues. For example, we have a lot of thin client devices. We track other information like company asset tag, purchase date, warranty date, etc. If that device's IP changes we get a duplicate. What's worse is if the device's name changes it doesn't carry that tracking information over & we potentially loose information.
Is there a better way to uniquely identify devices or put in place a mechanism to identify when a devices IP or name changes?
