Configuration - Computer and Device custom fields

After upgrading to version 4 I set up the
configuration information but I am not clear
on what to do on the configuration screen
with the computer and device custom fields.
What do you type in those fields and
in what format would it be typed???

These are meant to change the display on the website.

For example, you can change "custom1" to "department".
