Hi,
I recently discovered LANsweeper and it seems to solve a lot of my needs for software inventory etc. - lots of nice features 🙂
And before I buy a premium membership, i wanted to test the free version, just to make sure that everything worked fine.
But I am having some problems with almost all of my workstations. LANsweeper says "RPC server unavailable" - and under each workstation --> errors --> Wmierror - The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)
And I have been trying to solve this problem.
I have made a group policy - just like in the knowledgebase.
http://lansweeper.com/kb/firewall.aspx
And if i run the command - netsh firewall show state - it shows:
Profile = Domain
Operational mode = Enable
Exception mode = Enable
Multicast/broadcast response mode = Enable
Notification mode = Enable
Group policy version = Windows Firewall
Remote admin mode = Enable
I then tried running the connection tester on a client:
Ping test OK
-----------------------------------------------
Remote registry test OK
-----------------------------------------------
Remote WMI access test OK
-----------------------------------------------
Remote \\severname\c$ access test OK
I checked that the service "Remote registry" is running. We use XP clients, but I just wanted to be sure that the service was running.
What else can I try?
Thanks in advance 🙂

OK, now could you try disabling the windows firewall on this machine and try again. (just as a test)
Also makes sure that no other firewall is running.
Disabled the Windows firewall - still the same.
We aren't using any other firewall.
But on thing I noticed. We have been testing LANswepper for about a week now. For some reason it has collected data from some computers - also my own computer. But now it cannot get data from almost all computers.
But the very weird part is - it can get data from a couple of virtual machines - one running XP Pro and one running Windows 7 beta - but not any physical machines.
Maybe it is just a coincidence, i don't know.

You need to use the connection tester from the server to the client not working.
Start the connectiontester with the same user as your service.
Test on both: IP address,Hostname,FQDN

Okay - just tried that - and I get the following error:
Ping test OK
-----------------------------------------------
Remote registry test OK
-----------------------------------------------
Remote WMI access test FAILED
The RPC server is unavailable. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800706BA)
