we have a lot of industrial devices running various forms of linux or bsd but the scan tools for non windows devices are very limited in lansweeper. what we want is a simple api that allows us to update the name of custom fields and the text content of the custom fields. how hard is that just provide a little bit of flexibility to the users to really add value for specific applications. lansweeper might even get some ideas from users on how to better scan devices - free development just for providing some flexibility.
how would we use this feature? we would use lansweeper to find stuff then anything it did not understand we scan with our own tools. our scanner would produce a report on a web server and we would simply add the url for that report to a customer field in lansweeper.

I've moved your question into its own topic so it can be answered without interrupting the contest topic.

Lansweeper can currently scan Linux computers that meet the requirements as outlined here. A guide to Linux scanning can be found here.

An asset API has been requested before and is already on our customer wishlist. We've added your feedback to this item in our internal feature tracking system. At this moment in time we don't have an estimated release date yet though for the asset API.

Lansweeper should be able to discover all devices that have one of the protocols available listed at the top of this article. An asset is created for any successful ping that also returns additional data, such as a MAC address. You could also have an asset page be generated for every successful ping by enabling "Save Pinged IP" in the IP Range scanning target's options under Scanning\Scanning Targets.
