Display Columns in Default Reports

I am looking for a way that i can modify the default asset type reports. The columns that are shown.

I if you click mouse over assets then pick, say "windows" it presents you with
AssetName, IP Address, Manufacturer, Model, Location, Last Seen.

What i would like to add is another column that has either the description, or a custom field entry

I'm sure that this can be done with custom reports. But i want it to be the default for selecting Assets > Assest Type.

Automatically generated pages cannot be modified. As you've mentioned, you can use custom reports to list the information you are after.
