This error occurs when Lansweeper cannot find usable credentials to scan an asset. This can happen for one of two reasons:
- No credentials exist that are applicable to the asset type being scanned, or
- Existing credentials cannot be decrypted.
Why this happens
All scanning and other credentials entered in the Lansweeper web console are encrypted before they are stored in the Lansweeper database. Encryption and decryption rely on an encryption key file located on the Lansweeper scanning server.
You may encounter this error if:
- Multiple scanning servers are used, and they do not share the same encryption key file, or
- The encryption key file was changed or replaced after credentials were already submitted.
In these cases, the key file currently present on the scanning server does not match the key file that was originally used to encrypt the credentials, making them unreadable.
How to resolve the issue
- Verify that valid credentials exist and are correctly assigned
Confirm that scanning credentials are present and properly mapped to the relevant assets or scanning targets.
Refer to this KB article for guidance: https://community.lansweeper.com/t5/scanning-your-network/create-and-map-scanning-credentials/ta-p/6...
- Ensure the correct encryption key file is in use
Follow all steps in the following KB article to verify and restore the correct encryption key file across all scanning servers: https://community.lansweeper.com/t5/troubleshooting-your/password-hash-errors/ta-p/64413
- Resubmit credentials if necessary
If restoring the correct encryption key file does not resolve the issue, the KB article in step 2 also explains how to re-enter (resubmit) credentials in the Lansweeper web console so they are encrypted with the correct key.
