Dear, 

Doing this, you may have duplicates then. 
If you change the asset type of a Windows computer for example, a new scan of the same devices will compare it with other Windows assets to see if it exists already? If you change it to desktop or laptop for example, you will a new asset with the type "Windows" again. For Windows assets, we recommend leaving the asset type "as is".

Sorry for the confusion. 
The principle is the same. We only change the default states. If the asset is set to a custom state, it won't change when rescanned. 

As mentioned in the description of the cleanup option, we only change "non-active" assets to active again.
