Renaming Detection

Hello,

We have renaming detection enabled. But this just doesn’t work in our environment. We have a scheduled scan every day and a lsclient is run at userlogon (in case computer is offline on schedule). No matter how its detected, every time we rename a computer lansweer just creates a new asset. If I manualy rescan the “old” asset it gives an arror

WMIERROR DNS redirected to WS-ICT-02-HERNO but expected computer WS-ICT-02 (WS-ICT-02) \root\cimv2

I have read that model, mac and serial number must be the same. And this could be potentially the problem.
We have several computer models where there is no product serial number is filled, sometimes it has baseboard serialnumber filled but also not whit all models.
Is there a way to exclude the required serialnumber in the renaming detection and only use mac address?

When an object is assigned a GUID, it keeps that value for life

Until you reinstall the operating system. The machine is still the same but the GUID is changed

I am inclined to believe this method of name detection is flawed as well. Any locally assembled PC is unlikely to have a model or a serial attached to it (unlike Dell, Lenovo, HP, and some Intel). As such lansweeper installs a new asset even though only the object's name has changed.

A simple query to the object's GUID is preferred, and the following is why.

Thanks for your reply.

In our case we would never transfer a network adapter to another computer cause we only use build in network adapters. In my opinion this could be a user choice how to check on renaming detection. Mac only ore combined whit serial.

Is it possible to add this in future versions?

Unfortunately it's not possible to use Windows rename detection without full Serial, Model and MAC information. The system was set up this way to be 100% certain it won't be merging the wrong assets. A MAC address could potentially be transferred to a different computer by for instance the transfer of a network card to another computer. All 3 of these things need to be effectively scannable from the Windows computer, manually filling in this information will not work, rename detection happens during scanning.

If you want to prevent duplicates in the future when renaming computers for which a serial number cannot be scanned, you can first rename the computer in Lansweeper before renaming the computer in Windows and rescanning.
