I would love to the lansweeper update the comptuer when the name changes instead of creating a new computer. We rename our computers when assigned to new users. when the comptuer is renamed from computer1 to comptuer2, it creates a new computer in lansweeper. I think it should just update the current record with the updated information. maybe change for what it looks for from computer name to mabey the mac address as this never changes.

He already answered that. The problem comes in when a network card dies and is replaced. Not to mention the MAC addresses aren't always unique.

LOL, they are "Supposed" to be unique, but I have definitely come across identical MAC Addresses on 2 NIC's before.
(and it wasn't a fake cloned MAC address)

This is one of the fundamental problems that every LAN Config Mgmt tool runs into.
There will ALWAYS be a need for manual intervention, but It would really make this product stand out from the crowd if an easy to use interface was designed.

Perhaps present a table of "likely" computer renames that showed which of the following did match:
MAC Address
service tag #
OS GUID

This table could then have a choice to merge records or delete (acknowledge) the row.

is there a way to scan computer based on MAC address?
so when renamed it will update the records?

There are different approaches:

1) Best solution: every vendor should use a service tag like Dell (this way there would never be any problem), unfortunately this will not happen.
2) Computernames: can give problems when you change hardware and use the same name.
3) Mac addresses: Can give real problems when you switch network cards or repair them.
4) A GUID in the registry: Will get lost when you reinstall the OS.

This would be a nice feature, instead of using the computer name as the primary key it would have to be SID instead.
