I can edi an asset but the save function does literally nothing. This a known problem?

It certainly does have the role enabled.

Previously when I (or my team) have emailed support it's gone into a black hole - hence coming here for a response first - the community seems to work better.

We are not aware of any issues on that level. Could you check if your account has the "Edit Asset Data" permission?
